Paddy, Wheat, and Vindhya Plateau Agriculture of Rewa

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Rewa district sits on the Vindhya plateau where red laterite soils alternate with deeper alluvial pockets in river valleys. Paddy is the dominant kharif crop in valley bottoms where water retention is good. Wheat dominates rabi cropping on plateau uplands. Arhar and urad are grown as both subsistence and cash crops in the transition zone. Rewa farmers practice a rotation of paddy-wheat-pulse over three years to maintain soil structure. The Son River and its tributaries provide irrigation through a network of medium-sized dams. Govindgarh and Semaria tehsils have micro-irrigation schemes serviced by lift pumps from Son canal. Traditional paddy varieties include Dubraj and Vishnubhog, aromatic rices prized across Chhattisgarh and eastern MP.
