Rayagada Bonda Tribe Ornament Traditional Dress
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The Bonda (Bondo) tribe of Rayagada and Malkangiri districts are among India's most distinctive PVTGs (particularly vulnerable tribal groups), identifiable by the women's unique dress of bead necklaces stacked from collarbone to chin, a small bead skirt (ringa), and elaborate aluminium and brass ring ornaments — a traditional aesthetic that has been maintained despite decades of contact with mainstream society. Bonda women's ornament tradition is entirely self-sufficient: they process wild plant fibres and glass beads into their characteristic necklaces themselves, with different necklace colours and bead counts signifying age, marital status, and social rank. Bonda tribal haats (weekly markets) in Rayagada's Mathili area are a cultural interface where Bondas trade forest produce and handmade items — the women's aluminium and brass ornaments, handwoven cotton cloth — for salt, oil, and metal tools from plains traders.
