Rajgir Nalanda Silk Reeling Loom Weaving Bihar

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Rajgir in Nalanda district Bihar produces hand-reeled silk thread from Bombyx mori cocoons and hand-loom woven silk fabric in a tradition linked to ancient Magadha kingdom textile craft. Weavers use pit-loom equipment to produce plain and twill silk in 44-inch width for saree and dress material. Rajgir Cooperative Silk Society manages cocoon procurement from mulberry gardens in surrounding Buddhist circuit villages and markets silk cloth to Bihar Tourism Department gift shops and Buddhist monastery textile buyers from Japan, South Korea, and Sri Lanka. Rajgir silk uses cultivated mulberry-fed silkworm cocoons, distinguishing it from Bhagalpur tassar silk which uses wild forest-fed cocoons. The Nalanda Buddhist circuit connection provides steady pilgrimage tourism demand for souvenir silk fabric bearing Bodh Gaya lotus and Dharma Chakra motifs.
