Rajasthan Natural Dye Indigo Pomegranate Block Print Sanganer

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Rajasthan traditional textile printing uses a complex vocabulary of natural dyes alongside block printing: indigo fermentation vats (neelam) in Sanganer, pomegranate rind (anardana) yellow-green in Bagru, henna resist printing in Jodhpur, and tamarind seed mordant-printing in Barmer. The Chippa caste of dyers and printers in Sanganer, Bagru, and Akola maintains fermentation vat knowledge for indigo reduction that requires daily monitoring of chemistry, temperature, and reducing agents. Natural dye block print cooperatives like TARA Projects and Anokhi Foundation link Chippa artisans to premium export and domestic markets. Sanganer natural dye sarees and fabrics command 300-500% premium over synthetic-dyed equivalents in eco-fashion markets.
