Potato Farming Hooghly Bardhaman West Bengal

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

West Bengal is the largest potato-producing state in India, with Hooghly, Bardhaman, Medinipur, and Cooch Behar districts as the main growing areas. The state produces over 12 million tonnes annually, primarily from the winter (rabi) crop planted in November and harvested in February-March. West Bengal farmers produce both the table variety Jyoti and the processing variety Lady Rosetta used by chip manufacturers. The extensive cold storage network of Hooghly and Bardhaman districts stores surplus potato from harvest through July when prices improve. Hooghly potato cooperatives negotiate directly with ITC, PepsiCo, and other processor buyers for contract farming. West Bengal Agricultural Marketing Board organises direct marketing sabhas to reduce commission agent intermediation. Potato farming is the primary winter cash crop for over 5 million farming households in the state.
