Pochampally Nalgonda Ikat Weaving Silk Cotton Telangana

Pochampally village in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana is the origin of Pochampally ikat, a traditional tie-dye resist-woven textile recognised with a Geographical Indication tag and designated as one of India intangible cultural heritage textiles. Weavers in Pochampally and surrounding villages of Nalgonda district tie and dye both warp and weft yarn before weaving to create geometric double-ikat patterns in silk and cotton. The Pochampally Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society and surrounding village societies support weavers with subsidised yarn procurement and design development. Master weavers train apprentices in the complex counting and tying technique to align resist-dyed sections precisely for the pattern to emerge in the woven cloth. Pochampally sarees and dress material are sold at Andhra Pradesh state emporiums and craft fairs. Exports to Japan, Germany, and the United States support premium ikat weavers in the cluster.
