Phad Painting — Rajasthan's Portable Temple Scroll Art

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Phad is a scroll painting tradition from Shahpura (Bhilwara district), Rajasthan, depicting the life stories of folk deities Pabuji and Devnarayan on long horizontal cloth scrolls (15–25 feet long, 5 feet tall). Used as portable temples by Bhopa priest communities, the paintings travel with their custodians who sing the hero's story while a torch illuminates the relevant scene. The bold flat color technique uses natural pigments (minerals, plant gums) on khadi cloth sized with starch. Traditional designs include kalga, dancing peacocks, and battle scenes. Only 3–4 families remain who can paint the full Pabuji Phad — the craft has GI tag recognition.
