Pathankot Ravi River Trout Mahseer Fishing

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

The Ravi river in its upper stretches near Pathankot and into the Himachal Pradesh hills supports populations of mahseer (Tor putitora), the prized sport fish of Himalayan rivers, and rainbow trout introduced at government hatcheries in the hills above Pathankot. Fishermen using traditional cast nets catch rohu, catla, and mahseer in the Ravi's calmer stretches near Madhopur headworks, while trout farming at state fisheries centres produces fish sold to hotels and restaurants in Pathankot and Amritsar. Pathankot's proximity to the Himachal hills makes it a gateway for angling tourism targeting mahseer in the Chakki and Ravi tributaries.
