Palani Panchamrit Abhishek Ritual of Tamil Nadu

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Palani Murugan temple in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu is famous for the panchamrit abhishek — the sacred ritual bathing of the deity with a mixture of five substances: raw milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ripe banana. The panchamrit runs down the idol and is collected at the base as prasadam (sacred food). Palani panchamrit received GI certification — the first ritual food product to be GI certified in India. The temple administers quality control: all five ingredients must meet specific purity standards. The abhishek generates over 500 litres of panchamrit daily during normal worship, distributed as prasad to lakhs of pilgrims. Local farmers supplying milk, honey, and bananas to the temple form part of an informal agricultural ecosystem around the temple town. The GI certification was important in legally protecting the authentic Palani panchamrit from imitation products sold outside the temple.
