Nalgonda Lac Bangle Lakhera Artisans Nimmalagudem Telangana

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Nalgonda district in Telangana — particularly Nimmalagudem village and Miryalaguda town — is home to the Lakhera community of lac bangle artisans who produce coloured glass-lac composite bangles worn as auspicious wedding and festival ornaments by women across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The process involves melting lac resin procured from Chhattisgarh forest traders, mixing with mineral pigment for colour, wrapping the hot paste around a wooden spindle core in concentric layers, embedding glass chip inserts, and polishing on a hand lathe for a shimmering finish. A skilled Lakhera artisan produces 200-300 bangles per day in sizes from infant wrist to adult, across red, green, blue, and golden colour ranges. Nalgonda lac bangles are an obligatory ritual gift at Telugu weddings for married women and are sold at weekly haats in Suryapet, Kodad, and Nalgonda town. The cluster has received MSME development support from the Telangana government through raw material subsidy and participation in national handicraft exhibitions.
