Mojari Leather Shoe Jodhpur Jaisalmer Rajasthan Camel Craft

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Mojari is the hand-crafted leather footwear of Rajasthan, flat-soled and pointed-toe in style with elaborate embroidered or embossed camel leather uppers, made by Mochi community artisans in Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner. Unlike the phulwari bead-work jutti of Punjab, Rajasthan mojari uses camel skin tanned with traditional vegetable processes and decorated with geometric brass tack work or applique leather patterns. The classic Jaisalmer mojari in natural camel-beige leather with brass tack geometric patterns is the most distinctive regional variant, connected to the desert culture of the Thar. Mochi artisans in Jaisalmer still tan camel skin using traditional babool bark and pomegranate rind tannin processes, producing leather with a characteristic pale golden colour. The mojari making process involves hand cutting, stitching with waxed linen thread, and last-forming without machines. Contemporary Jaisalmer mojari cooperatives produce both traditional desert styles and contemporary fashion variants in suede and buffalo leather for the urban market. Export to lifestyle stores in Germany, UK, and Japan. Tourism-driven retail at Jaisalmer fort market supplies direct to foreign visitors.
