Meerut district in western UP is India's largest sugarcane gur (jaggery) production zone, where the Muzaffarnagar-Meerut-Hapur belt grows the UP 0238 (Karan 4) sugarcane variety on alluvial soil with the highest sucrose content in North India, processed into jaggery at seasonal kolhu (animal-drawn cane press) units from November to March. Meerut is also India's premier sports equipment manufacturing hub — the Meerut/Jalandhar duopoly produces over 80% of India's cricket bats, hockey sticks, boxing gloves, and footballs, with the Meerut cluster especially dominant in cricket batting willow and hockey sticks. The 1857 Sepoy Mutiny started in Meerut when sepoys refused to bite greased cartridges, and the district's cantonment history and 1857 memorial are heritage sites.
