Medak Single Ikat Handloom Cotton Saree Telangana

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Medak district in Telangana borders the Nalgonda-Yadadri Pochampally ikat weaving cluster and has its own body of handloom weavers in Toopran and Siddipet areas who practice single-ikat resist-dye cotton weaving producing geometric chevron and diamond patterned sarees and dupattas for daily and festival use. Unlike the double-ikat that defines the GI-tagged Pochampally fabric, Medak weavers use warp-only ikat (single ikat) — tying and dyeing cotton warp threads before weaving in successive colour sequences — producing durable sarees with characteristic horizontal chevron stripes at lower cost than double-ikat. Medak handloom sarees are purchased by women of Gowda, Padmashali, and Mudiraj communities at Toopran weekly haats and district textile fairs. Weavers in Medak operate under master weaver arrangements where the master provides yarn and dye recipes, collecting finished cloth and paying per metre woven. Telangana State Handloom and Textile Development Corporation has piloted cooperative conversion in Medak to replace master-weaver dependency and provide direct market access through Lepakshi and Khadi Telangana outlets.
