Mangalagiri Handloom Cotton Sarees — Andhra Pradesh
Contributed by System
Mangalagiri, near Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, is renowned for its GI-tagged handloom cotton sarees characterised by their distinctive zari-woven nizam border (tank border) and natural dye traditions. The cotton used is typically 2-ply combed yarn with pure zari borders of silver or gold thread. Mangalagiri weavers are predominantly from the Padmasali community, working on fly-shuttle pit looms. The saree is known for its crisp feel, durability, and unique ribbed texture created by a special weave structure using extra warp threads. Kurtas and dress materials in Mangalagiri cotton are popular in summer for their breathability. The weaver community faces competition from power-loom imitations, and the Andhra Pradesh Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society helps authentic weavers access direct market linkages and e-commerce platforms.
