Malda Himsagar Fazli Mango Cooperative West Bengal
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Malda in the Malda district of West Bengal is the mango capital of eastern India, home to the famed Himsagar, Fazli, Langra, and Kishanbhog mango varieties that ripen during the May-July summer season. The Malda mango orchard belt stretching across English Bazar, Old Malda, and Kaliachak blocks produces over 200,000 tonnes annually, supplied by large multi-generational orchards of the Rajbongshi and Sheikh communities. Cooperative primary agricultural societies procure and market Himsagar — a highly aromatic variety with saffron-yellow flesh — and Fazli — a massive green-skinned variety prized for its size — through APMC markets and direct contracts with Kolkata and Delhi wholesalers. GI certification for Fazli of Malda protects the variety from imitation. Mango orchards also produce wood apple, litchi, and jackfruit in the inter-season. Climate-controlled cold storage cooperatives extend the Malda mango season from June-July through September using Fazli long shelf life.
