Lunglei Tlabung Bamboo Maize Myanmar Border Mizoram South

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Lunglei district in southern Mizoram is the gateway to the Mizoram-Myanmar border and contains Tlabung (Demagiri) at the tri-junction with Bangladesh. The district's terrain — parallel ranges running north-south covered in mixed tropical and subtropical forest — supports jhum (shifting cultivation) of maize, millets, and upland rice by Mizo, Chakma, and Mara tribal communities. Bamboo shoot processing (boiled, fermented, and dried) is a key food and commercial product of Lunglei's villages. The Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary in Lunglei district protects the serow, Indochinese tiger (transient), and Malayan sun bear. Mara weavers produce distinctive Mara blanket (Puonlaisen) with bold geometric patterns in red and black on white cotton.
