Kurukshetra Sarasvati River Heritage Ecology

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

The Sarasvati, the ancient river described in the Rigveda as flowing through the Kurukshetra plain, is identified archaeologically with the Ghaggar-Hakra channel system and is a central element of Haryana's cultural identity. Kurukshetra University's Sarasvati Heritage Project maps ancient river course traces in the district, and the Haryana government has undertaken channel revival works to restore seasonal water flow in the dry Sarasvati bed. The sacred pools of Sannihit Sarovar and Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra city are believed to be Sarasvati water sources and are sites of mass ritual bathing during eclipses that draw hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
