Kondapalli Wooden Toys — Andhra Pradesh
Contributed by System
Kondapalli, near Vijayawada in NTR district of Andhra Pradesh, is famous for its painted wooden toy-making tradition (kondapalli bommalu) practised by the Aryakshtriya community. The unique softwood used is tella poniki (white sander, Lagerstroemia microcarpa) — lightweight, crack-resistant, and easy to carve. Artisans carve separate body parts, join them with tamarind seed paste, apply a clay and sawdust primer (pindi) for smoothness, and hand-paint in bright vegetable and synthetic colours. Traditional themes include bullock carts, dancing dolls, mythological figures, and village life scenes. Each piece consists of separately carved and assembled components. Kondapalli toys received GI tag in 2005 and are listed under Geographical Indications Registry. Government craft emporiums like Lepakshi market them nationally, but artisans face income pressure as plastic toys dominate.
