Konark Sun Temple Stone Wheel Chariot Architecture Odisha

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Konark in Odisha's Puri district preserves the remains of the 13th century CE Sun Temple (Surya Deula) commissioned by King Narasimha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, designed as a colossal stone chariot of the sun god with twelve pairs of intricately carved stone wheels (each 3 metres in diameter) and seven stone horses at the base of the sanctum platform. The temple's erotic sculpture panels on the exterior walls are interpreted variously as Tantric initiatory imagery, a record of Kama Sutra postures, or a cosmological allegory of desire and liberation. The main sanctum tower (deul) collapsed in the 17th century, but the jagamohana (audience hall) survives and is filled with sand to prevent further collapse. Konark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the architectural inspiration for the Indian Navy badge and the Odisha state emblem. The carved wheels function as a sundial — the shadow of the wheel spokes and medallions indicates the time of day with precision that demonstrates the mathematical and astronomical knowledge of Eastern Ganga dynasty architects and sculptors.
