Kambala and Buffalo Culture of Kolhapur's Rural Areas
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Kolhapur district's interface with the coastal Konkan culture creates a zone where Kambala (buffalo racing, a coastal Karnataka tradition) meets the inland Deccan buffalo culture. Buffalo rearing for draught power, milk, and as symbols of agricultural wealth has been central to Kolhapur's farming culture. The Marathwada and Deccan strain of Murrah-crossed buffaloes in Kolhapur produce high-fat milk that supplies the Kolhapur milk cooperative. Buffalo bull fights (mhaicha kombda) at rural fairs are a traditional spectacle sport, though regulated. Traditional buffalo husbandry practices in Kolhapur include feeding with freshly cut sugarcane tops during the sugar season, a practice that dramatically improves milk production and is unique to sugarcane-growing areas. Kolhapur's Gavali (buffalo-herding) community maintains hereditary pastoral practices alongside settled dairy farming, with families maintaining herds of 20-50 buffaloes.
