Kasavu Kerala Cotton Mundu Weave Balaramapuram Kerala

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kasavu is the traditional Kerala handloom cotton weave characterized by pure white cloth with a broad zari gold or golden-yellow border woven on the selvedge, produced primarily at Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram and Chendamangalam in Ernakulam using pit looms and fly-shuttle frame looms. The mundu lower wrap cloth and neriyathu upper drape cloth set in kasavu cotton is the ceremonial dress of Kerala worn by both men and women for Onam, temple visits, and weddings. The characteristic kasavu border is woven in gold-wrapped or imitation zari thread in simple stripe or stepped border patterns, with the width of the gold band traditionally indicating occasion formality. Weavers from the Saliya, Devanga, and Chaliya communities have practiced Balaramapuram kasavu weaving for at least 300 years under the patronage of the Travancore royal family. The Balaramapuram Weavers Cooperative runs looms producing approximately 60 sets daily. Chendamangalam kasavu from Ernakulam uses a finer 100 to 120 thread count cotton woven by Ezhava community artisans. Kerala handloom kasavu received GI certification in 2007. Approximately 4,000 families depend on kasavu weaving in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts. State government programs through the Kerala Handloom Development Corporation provide yarn subsidies, design support, and festival procurement contracts to kasavu weavers.
