Jalore Granite Stone Quarrying Cooperative Rajasthan

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Jalore in the Jalore district of Rajasthan is the centre of India decorative granite quarrying industry, producing black, grey, and pink Jalore granite used in flooring, countertops, and cladding for construction projects in India and exported to Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. The Jalore granite belt extends through Sirohi, Pali, and Barmer districts, with quarrying cooperatives and small enterprises extracting blocks from the ancient Precambrian rock of the Aravalli range. Stone workers cooperative societies provide credit and equipment pooling for granite block extraction and processing. Artisan stone polishing cooperative workshops in Jalore town process rough blocks into polished slabs and tiles. Jalore is also significant for the Topekhana — a historic cannon storage — of the Jalore fort and for the Sufi dargah of Malik Shah at Jalore. The granite industry has drawn migrant workers from Rajasthan tribal communities who face occupational health risks from silica dust in quarrying operations, prompting cooperative health insurance programmes.
