Beas River Trout Fisheries and River Ecology Kullu

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Beas river flowing through the Kullu valley is one of India's premier trout streams with healthy populations of Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout attracting anglers from across the country. Traditional fishing communities use hand-crafted nets, bamboo traps, and rod fishing techniques. The cold clear water fed by glaciers and perennial springs supports diverse aquatic ecology including rare Himalayan fish species. Trout hatcheries established in the Kullu valley produce fingerlings for stocking depleted river sections. Community-based river conservation efforts protect spawning sites from gravel extraction and pollution. Traditional ecological knowledge of seasonal fish movement, spawn timing, and breeding habitat helps conservation managers. Sport angling generates livelihoods for local guides and supports nature-based tourism.
