Ginger Cultivation and Spice Farming Hamirpur District
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Hamirpur district is known for cultivation of ginger and other spices on terrace farms at elevations between 600 and 1200 metres. The well-drained loamy soils on terraced hillsides and the district's warm summers provide suitable conditions. Traditional ginger varieties with strong pungency and medicinal properties are preferred over commercial hybrid varieties by traditional farmers. Ginger is harvested in autumn, cleaned, and sold fresh or processed into dry ginger (saunth) by drying on open terraces. Traditional knowledge of soil preparation, seed rhizome selection, and harvesting timing is transmitted through farming families. Medicinal uses of ginger in traditional Himachali household medicine include preparations for digestive ailments, colds, and warming tonics for cold months.
