Hasanamba Temple Annual Opening Festival Heritage, Hassan
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Hasanamba Devi temple in Hassan town is distinctive in that it opens its doors only once a year — during the 8-day Hasanamba festival in October-November (during the Deepavali season). For the remaining 350+ days, the temple sanctum remains sealed, and the oil lamp lit at the previous year's closing is believed to burn continuously without refilling. This unique tradition draws lakhs of devotees for the annual opening. The temple deity, depicted as a form of Parvati holding a lotus, is made of solid gold and is considered highly powerful. The architecture is modest by South Indian standards — the power of the deity, not the size of the structure, is the focus. The annual festival brings revenue and cultural vibrancy to Hassan town.
