Gurdaspur Bamboo Basketry Craft Shivalik
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Gurdaspur district's border with Himachal Pradesh along the Ravi river basin provides access to Shivalik bamboo resources that craftsmen in Gurdaspur's Pathankot-adjacent villages use to weave utility baskets (tokri), grain sieves (chhalni), and fishing traps (ghara) using traditional strip-plaiting and coiling techniques. Bamboo craftsmen in Gurdaspur source culms from Shivalik forest patches and private bamboo plantations, splitting them with a bamboo knife into uniform strips for weaving. The basketry craft serves both domestic agricultural market demand and the heritage craft market, with government craft centres providing design training to modernise basket forms for urban buyers.
