Tobacco Cultivation and Curing Tradition of Guntur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Guntur district is India's largest tobacco-producing district, providing over 40% of the country's total tobacco output and the majority of flue-cured Virginia tobacco for cigarette manufacturing. Tobacco cultivation in Guntur's black cotton soil requires careful crop management — transplanting seedlings, leaf removal for uniform growth, and harvesting individual leaves at precisely the right maturity. The most skilled operation is flue-curing: hanging harvested leaves in ventilated curing barns where wood-fired heat is circulated for 5–7 days, carefully managing temperature and humidity to develop the desired golden colour and flavour. Guntur's tobacco auction yards at Chirala and Guntur town are among the world's largest, with multinational tobacco companies competing for high-quality leaf.
