Pulasa Fish — Seasonal Delicacy of Andhra Rivers

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Pulasa (Hilsa Shad, Tenualosa ilisha) is Andhra Pradesh's most prized seasonal fish, ascending the Godavari, Krishna, and their tributaries from the sea to spawn during the monsoon season (July–September). The fish's flesh is exceptionally rich, oily, and flavourful during the spawning run — a result of the energy stores it accumulates for the upstream journey. Pulasa from the Godavari river is considered particularly superior due to the river's specific chemistry. A single large Pulasa commands prices of Rs 2,000–5,000 during peak season — making it one of India's most expensive fresh fish by weight. The traditional preparation is a sour tamarind curry with minimum spicing to let the fish's natural flavour dominate. The annual Pulasa season generates cultural excitement and festival-like atmosphere in Godavari delta towns.
