Garhwa Palamu Tiger Reserve Wildlife Ecology
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Garhwa district is part of the Palamu Tiger Reserve landscape, and its forested hills connecting to Betla in Latehar form the contiguous wildlife corridor essential for tiger and elephant movement across the Jharkhand plateau. Garhwa's Son river tributaries drain through dense sal forest where tribal communities collect mahua, kendu leaf, and wild honey under forest rights entitlements. The district's chero community was historically the forest-dwelling people of the Son valley whose ancestral knowledge of Palamu's wildlife habitats informs modern forest management under the Forest Department's co-management approach with local communities.
