Fazilka Organic Vegetable Farming Gang Canal

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Fazilka's Gang Canal-irrigated zone supports winter vegetable cultivation including potato, cauliflower, and carrot grown by smallholder farmers who are transitioning to natural farming under the Punjab government's zero-budget natural farming initiative. Farmers apply jeevamrit (fermented cow urine and dung) and beejamrit (seed treatment) instead of chemical fertilisers, producing vegetables with lower input costs and higher market premiums at organic mandis in Abohar and Amritsar. Fazilka's proximity to the Rajasthan border also creates demand for fresh vegetables in the Ganganagar market across the state line, giving border-belt farmers a competitive logistics advantage.
