Erode Turmeric Research Station and Kongu Agriculture

Erode district, known as the turmeric city of India, supplies over 60% of India's turmeric output and a significant portion of global exports. The National Research Centre for Turmeric (ICAR) at Erode develops improved varieties and best practices for farmers across the Kongu belt. Traditional Erode farmers grow Erode Local, Rajapuri, and Duggirala varieties on red loamy soil using furrow irrigation, and dry the harvested rhizomes on concrete platforms before polishing them in curing mills. The Erode turmeric market operates a daily auction where prices are determined by curcumin content — tested on-site by spectrometer. Traditional Ayurvedic and food-processing buyers still prefer field-cured Erode turmeric over chemically polished alternatives.
