Dumka Jharkhand Santali Tasar Silk Weaving Cooperative
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Dumka district in Santhal Parganas division of Jharkhand is a hub of Santali tribal tasar silk weaving. Women weavers produce coarse-woven tasar fabric from wild silk cocoons collected from Arjun and Asan trees in sal forests. Santali weavers traditionally use backstrap or frame looms to produce yardage in natural tan-gold tasar colour with minimal supplementary pattern. State government tribal cooperative societies under JHARCRAFT supply raw tasar yarn and design training. Urban buyers increasingly seek natural tasar for sustainable textile applications. Cooperative marketing connects Dumka weavers with eco-fashion buyers in Delhi and Mumbai. Santali weaving is also an income supplement for women during agricultural lean season. GI recognition for Jharkhand tasar has been sought by tribal cooperative federation.
