Brij Rasiya: Folk Songs of the Braj Region in Dholpur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Dholpur district lies at the southern edge of the Braj cultural zone, the sacred landscape associated with Krishna's childhood, and shares its folk music traditions with Mathura, Agra, and Bharatpur. Rasiya is the predominant folk song form: short, melodic songs describing Krishna's childhood pranks, his love with Radha, and the playful rivalry between gopis. Rasiyas are performed during Holi, Janmashtami, and Phoolwalon ki Sair festivals. The instruments are dholak, manjira (cymbals), and harmonium. Professional Rasiya performers (gayaks) are invited to neighbourhood kathas and satsangs, performing through the night. The lyric tradition is oral but some families maintain handwritten diwans (poetry collections) passed from teacher to student. Dholpur's Rasiya has a distinct flavour influenced by both Rajasthani and Braj musical modes.
