The Sri Venkateswara temple at Tirumala in Chittoor district is the world's most visited pilgrimage destination and the wealthiest Hindu temple, receiving over 100,000 devotees daily and managing an annual income exceeding Rs 3,000 crore. The temple complex sits at 853 metres elevation on the Tirumala hills, approached by winding roads and ancient footpaths. The main shrine's architecture dates to the Chola period (9th century CE) with subsequent Pallava, Vijayanagara, and later additions creating a layered architectural complex. The gilded vimana (tower over the main sanctum), the massive Ananda Nilayam, and the series of prakarams (enclosure walls) with their gopurams represent over 1,000 years of architectural patronage. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams manages the entire complex through a trust administration.
