Multai and Tapti River Origin Sacred Heritage near Chhindwara
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Multai town in Betul district — near the Chhindwara border — is the sacred origin point of the Tapti River, one of the few peninsular rivers flowing west to the Arabian Sea. The Tapti origin tank at Multai is a pilgrimage site visited on Kartik Purnima and Tapti Jayanti. The river is worshipped as daughter of the sun god Surya, and her westward flow — contrary to most peninsular rivers — is explained in mythology as the river cooling herself by flowing away from the sun. The Chhindwara border zone is the upper watershed of Tapti tributaries that drain the eastern Satpura slopes. Forest communities in this zone follow traditional restrictions on logging near stream heads, recognising the link between upland forest and downstream river flow — knowledge that aligns precisely with modern watershed hydrology.
