Champhai Apple Myanmar Border Trade Mizoram Northeast Gateway

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Champhai district in eastern Mizoram on the Myanmar border is Mizoram's apple-growing district — the cool highland climate (1,400m) of the Champhai Plain (the only large flat valley in Mizoram) allows apple, kiwi, and passion fruit cultivation alongside the traditional paddy and maize. Champhai is the principal gateway for cross-border trade with Myanmar's Chin State — historically, Mizo and Chin peoples share ethnic and linguistic ties (both Kuki-Chin group), and informal border trade in goods, livestock, and traditional crafts has been a centuries-old exchange. The district's Rih Dil Lake — a heart-shaped lake just inside Myanmar considered sacred by Mizo people as the resting place of departing souls — is a site of deep cultural significance.
