Cashew Feni Goa Traditional Distillation Spirit Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Cashew Feni is a traditional double-distilled spirit made from fermented cashew apple juice, produced in Goa for over 400 years using clay pot (bhann) and copper still distillation. Goa has over 4000 registered Feni distillers (bhattis) operating small family stills during the cashew season (March-June) when fallen cashew apples are crushed, fermented for 3 days, and distilled twice. Cashew Feni (urrak in first distillation, feni in double distillation) is Goa indigenous alcoholic beverage with GI protection and a distinct coconut-floral aroma profile. Goa Feni Producers Cooperative has pushed for international recognition of Feni as a Heritage Spirit to open export markets. Feni cocktail culture has made it a premium tourism product.
