Bilaspur district is Chhattisgarh's commercial and judicial hub and a centre of Kosa silk (Tussar) weaving where Devangan and Panka caste weavers produce the rich gold-toned Chhattisgarhi Kosa sari — considered India's finest Tussar silk — woven with raw tussar (Antheraea mylitta) cocoons reeled from cocoons reared on arjun and sal trees in Bastar and Surguja. Kosa silk from Chhattisgarh has GI status, and Bilaspur's weavers produce elaborate jacquard-patterned Kosa saris for the bridal market. Ambikapur (Surguja district headquarters) is the entry point for the Surguja-Bastar corridor's adivasi craft, and the district's Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary protects elephant corridors in the Surguja plateau forests.
