Bhiwani Boxing Tradition Haryana Olympics
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Bhiwani district has produced more Olympic, Commonwealth, and Asian Games boxing medallists than any other district in India, earning it the nickname Bhiwani Boxing Club Belt and inspiring the 2013 Bollywood film Mary Kom about another Indian boxing champion. The tradition traces to the Bhiwani Boxing Club founded by Jagdish Singh in the 1970s which trained champions like Virender Singh (2008 Beijing bronze), Jitender Kumar, and Akhil Kumar. Bhiwani's boxing culture is embedded in the Ahirwal community's Akhada wrestling and martial arts tradition, with dozens of private boxing academies now training youth from farming families who see boxing as a path to employment in the armed forces and police services.
