Bhagalpur Tussar Silk Katia Weaving Bihar

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Bhagalpur in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar is known as the Silk City of India and produces the distinctive bhagalpuri silk fabric woven from tussar cocoons collected from the Sal and Arjun forest trees of Jharkhand. Bhagalpur silk is characterised by a naturally textured surface with a slight nub, warm golden-brown natural colour, and a drape that makes it distinctly different from smooth cultivated mulberry silk. The weaving cooperative cluster concentrated in Champa Nagari and Nathnagar areas of Bhagalpur city employs weavers from the Muslim Ansari and Hindu Tanti communities. Cooperative primary societies procure raw silk from Jharkhand tasar rearing cooperatives and supply to weaving units. The Bihar State Handloom Corporation Handcraft markets Bhagalpur silk sarees, dress material, and scarves through state emporiums and Silk India fairs. GI certification protects Bhagalpur Silk. Export to Italy and France for use in haute couture fashion has generated premium market opportunities for cooperative weavers.
