Bastar Iron Craft of Kondagaon Chhattisgarh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Bastar iron craft (loh shilp) is a traditional metalworking tradition of the Lohar tribal community of Bastar division in Chhattisgarh, producing decorative and functional iron objects — figures, lamps, tools, and architectural elements — from recycled scrap iron. The craft uses bellows-fired forges, hammer and anvil beating, and cold bending rather than casting. Signature products include the dancing figure lamp (diya), ceremonial weapons, and the characteristic abstract iron trees with hanging bells. Bastar iron work received GI certification. The craft was historically used to produce agricultural tools and ritual objects for Gond and Muria communities. Contemporary production adapts traditional forms for interior design, export to galleries, and craft fairs. Kondagaon and Jagdalpur are the main production centres. Cooperative artisans supply craft NGOs and online marketplaces. The Bastar Lohar community is small but their work is disproportionately visible in Indian craft markets.
