Balasore district on Odisha's northern coast has a significant marine fishing tradition with Jaliya Kaibarta fishers operating from Chandipur, Talasari, and Kansabahal beaches using country and mechanised boats to catch pomfret, surmai, and prawn in the Odisha-Bengal coastal waters. Balasore's Chandipur beach is also the launch site of India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) missile test range, making the coastal sand flats both a traditional fishing ground and a defence research facility. The district's Udayagiri, Khichingam, and the Panchalingeswar temple are heritage and pilgrimage sites in the Simlipal foothills, drawing tourists who combine coastal and forest visits in north Odisha.
