Anand AMUL Dairy Cooperative Kheda Milk Revolution Gujarat
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Anand district is the birthplace of India's White Revolution — where Tribhuvandas Patel and Verghese Kurien transformed the Kheda Cooperative Milk Producers Union into AMUL (1946-1949), the template that became the National Dairy Development Board's Operation Flood that made India the world's largest milk producer. The AMUL dairy in Anand processes over 3.5 million litres of milk daily from 3.6 million farmer-members across Gujarat into butter, cheese, ghee, ice cream, and UHT milk, returning 80% of consumer price to farmers — a cooperative model that has been replicated in 50+ countries. Anand Agricultural University's veterinary and dairy science colleges have trained thousands of rural development practitioners who spread the cooperative dairy model across India.
