Krishnanattam Classical Dance Drama of Alappuzha
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Krishnanattam is a classical dance-drama form depicting the life of Lord Krishna through a cycle of eight plays, traditionally performed only at the Guruvayur temple in Thrissur but with deep historical roots in the Alappuzha region's temple culture. Performers undergo 10–12 years of training under a guru, mastering elaborate facial expressions (navarasas), precise hand gestures (mudras), and vigorous footwork while wearing towering gold-painted head-dresses and colourful make-up. The form was created in the 17th century by King Manaveda of Calicut. Unlike Kathakali, Krishnanattam is specifically devotional, performed as an offering to the deity. Troupes from Alappuzha's Krishnanattam Kalaris participate in temple circuits across Kerala.
