Agra is India largest footwear manufacturing centre, producing an estimated 28 percent of India total footwear output from a dense cluster of tanneries, leather goods units, and footwear factories centred on the Agra Leather Products Cluster, with both factory production for domestic brands and the traditional craft production of hand-stitched jootis (embroidered leather shoes) by the Chamar and Jatav artisan communities who have maintained the leather craft for centuries as their traditional hereditary work. Agra tanneries supply leather to the Kolkata footwear industry as well as processing for export to European luxury goods brands, and the Agra leather cluster is a government-recognised MSME cluster.
