UK Warns Against Satellite Phones in Updated India Travel Advisory

A new travel advisory issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) for India has cautioned Britons against using satellite phones without a valid license, as per EU regulations. In India, the possession of such devices is strictly prohibited and may result in arrest or detention, as stated in the advisory on the official FCDO travel website.

The latest advisory advises that the Department of Telecommunications in India must grant permission for satellite phones and certain communication equipment, such as radio transmitters or listening devices. To ensure proper documentation, British travelers are advised to contact the High Commission of India in London for clarification.

An official from the FCDO has stated that without proper clearance, unauthorized entry of satellite phones and other restricted devices into India can result in legal consequences. Travelers are strongly advised to be aware of local laws to avoid problems, as the advisory notes that using non-satellite equipment can lead to confiscation, large fines or criminal penalties.
