President Joe Biden has proclaimed January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning to honor the late former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. On this day, federal government offices will close, and the nation will observe a state funeral in Washington, D.C., to commemorate Carter’s life and legacy.

The official funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral. Important people and leaders from many countries are likely to come. Before the funeral, President Carter’s body will be placed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda from January 7 to January 9 so that people can visit and honor him.

President Biden said, “President Carter was a good, brave, and caring man. His life of helping others made him one of the most important leaders in our country’s history.”

Jimmy Carter was the 39th U.S. President, leading the country from 1977 to 1981. After leaving office, he worked hard to help people around the world. In 1982, he started The Carter Center, which works on human rights, democracy, and fighting diseases. Because of his efforts for peace, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

As the country gets ready to honor President Carter, government workers will have the day off, and the New York Stock Exchange has said it will close on January 9 for the National Day of Mourning.

The planned events give the nation a chance to think about President Carter’s work both at home and abroad, remembering his lasting dedication to peace, human rights, and helping others.
