Thrissur Pooram, South India’s most electrifying temple festival, unfurled its grandeur on May 6, 2025, transforming the city of Thrissur into a vibrant canvas of tradition, faith, and festivity. Held annually at the iconic Vadakkunnathan Temple, this cultural extravaganza drew lakhs of spectators, both domestic and international, eager to witness the sheer scale and spirit of the event.

Origin and Historical Significance of Thrissur Pooram

The Legacy of Sakthan Thampuran

Thrissur Pooram was conceptualized in the late 18th century by Sakthan Thampuran, the then Maharaja of Cochin. His visionary idea was to unite temples in and around Thrissur for a collective celebration that symbolized religious harmony, artistic brilliance, and communal unity. What began as a royal vision has now become a UNESCO-acknowledged heritage experience.

An Assembly of Ten Temples

Two major temple groups—the Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple and the Thiruvambady Sri Krishna Temple—lead the festival, each representing five smaller temples. Together, they bring unmatched fervor to the celebrations with vibrant processions, musical rivalries, and lavish displays.

Highlights of Thrissur Pooram 2025

The Famous Elephant Procession

More than 50 caparisoned elephants paraded majestically across the Thekkinkadu Maidanam, flanked by their mahouts and adorned with gold-plated nettipattam (forehead ornaments), silk parasols (muthukuda), and peacock-feather fans (aalavattam).

Key highlights:

  • The Kudamattam (umbrella exchange) between the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady groups mesmerized the audience with stunningly crafted parasols.
  • The elephants were lined up in spectacular symmetry, displaying Kerala’s traditional opulence.

Melam – The Rhythmic Heartbeat of Pooram

Three types of classical percussion ensembles dominated the Pooram grounds:

  • Panchari Melam
  • Pandi Melam
  • Ilanjithara Melam

These performances, involving over 250 artists, captivated onlookers with their hypnotic rhythm. Notably, the Ilanjithara Melam conducted under the ilanjhi tree near Vadakkunnathan Temple is regarded as one of the largest live traditional percussion gatherings in the world.
