The Controversy over the Bodhgaya temple

Must read

The Mahabodhi Temple, also known as BodhGaya, is a small village located in the Gaya district of the Indian state of Bihar. This is where the life of the young prince Siddhartha Gautama unfolded to the birth of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Recognised by the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, this is the place where Gautama Buddha got enlightment. But recently what broke its tranquility is the controversy surrounding the temple.

Temple Controversy

The controversy revolves around the administration and ownership of the Mahabodhi Temple, the sacred site where Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Buddhists who belong to the All India Buddhist Forum (AIBF) have started a protest demanding to give the control of the temple to the Buddhists. The primary contention is between the Buddhist and Hindu communities regarding the control of the temple. The Mahabodhi Temple Management Act of 1949 states that the temple must be managed by a committee that includes both Hindus and Buddhists (An eight member committee with four Hindus and four Buddhists); it appointed the district magistrate as the chairperson of the committee. This has sparked dissatisfaction among Buddhists, who argue that a Buddhist site should be under their complete control.

Several Buddhist organizations, both within India and internationally, have demanded that the government amend the law to ensure that the temple is exclusively governed by Buddhists. They argue that such an arrangement would be in line with other religious shrines, where management is typically under the control of the faith’s adherents. This demand has faced resistance from Hindu groups, who claim that Hinduism has had historical ties with the site and that the current management structure ensures fair administration.

Urbanisation and Commercialisation

The commercialisation and encroachments surrounding the shrine are another facet of the dispute. There have been claims that shops and unlawful constructions have proliferated close to the holy place, disturbing the spiritual atmosphere. Concerns have been expressed by activists that these kinds of activities are undermining Bodh Gaya’s sanctity and exploiting its religious significance for profit. Concerns about the preservation of the ancient Bodhi tree and the temple’s historic buildings have also been raised by conservationists, who worry that unchecked tourism and urbanisation may cause long-term harm.

In 2013, the Mahabodhi Temple complex was rocked by a series of low-intensity bomb bombings that injured multiple individuals, significantly escalating tensions. The event raised questions about the security of such an important religious place and underlined the vulnerability of Bodh Gaya to extremist operations. Although security was subsequently increased, worries about guaranteeing pilgrims’ and tourists’ long-term safety still exist.

Adding to the complexities, the Dalai Lama’s visits to Bodh Gaya often attract scrutiny from China, given the strained Indo-Chinese relations over Tibet. China closely monitors Tibetan Buddhist activities, and any large gatherings in Bodh Gaya with Tibetan monks are seen as politically significant. This international angle further fuels the controversy surrounding the site.

Moving Forward

Looking at the critical aspect of this controversy we are all eyes to what could be the future repercussions, whatever it will be, may justice prevail. Ironically, the controversy surrounding Bodh Gaya contradicts the very teachings of Buddhism—peace, non-attachment, and harmony. Buddha’s philosophy emphasizes detachment from material ownership and conflict, yet disputes over control and commercialization continue. True homage to Buddha’s wisdom would be to resolve these issues with compassion, ensuring that Bodh Gaya remains a sanctuary of enlightenment rather than division.
