Lambada Banjara Embroidery and Craft Heritage of Vikarabad

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Lambada (Banjara) communities concentrated in Vikarabad district's rural areas maintain their distinctive embroidery tradition alongside agricultural livelihoods. Lambada embroidery — using bright silk threads in interlocking geometric patterns, supplemented with shisha (mirror) work on coarse cotton cloth — creates the colourful costumes worn at festivals and the intricate bags, belts, and headpieces that are the Banjara's cultural identity markers. Vikarabad's Lambada craft cooperative markets these products through ITDA Telangana and at urban craft exhibitions. The designs encode family and clan identity markers — specific motif combinations identify the maker's lineage group to other Lambada community members.
